The Educational Implication of School Space: Ung-Ddung (엉뚱) as the Platform of Art and Culture, the Concept of Space Sovereignty and Art Education

Abstract

본 연구는 광주광역시 광산구에서 실행되었던 공간혁신 사례인 문화예술플랫폼 ‘엉뚱’의 운영과정과 교육과정 분석을 통하여 공간의 교육학적 의미를 탐구하였다. 학교공간을 학생의 삶이 실재하는 공간으로 파악하고, 공간에 내재되어 있는 학생 삶의 조건 및 실재를 드러내어, 공간에 대한 새로운 이해를 통합적인 방법으로 표현해보고자 시도하였던 문화플랫폼 ‘엉뚱’은 학습 자의 다양한 활동을 지원하는 미래형 학교 공간 추구 사례와 친환경적, 기능적, 심미적, 효율적, 정서적으로 안정적인 학교 공간을 시도하였다는 점에서 공통점을 지니지만, 학교라는 공적 공간에서 공간주권을 실천하고 있다는 점에서는 차별성을 보였다. 공간의 구조 및 공간의 구성 요소를 인식해 가는 교육과정이 미술 활동을 매개로 조직되어 있었고, 공간에 대해 인식하게 되는 과정이 공간에 대한 자신의 몸의 기억에서 비롯되어, 자신이 공간과 맺고 있는 관계성에 대한 자각으로 이어 지도록 설계되었다는 점 등은 공간이 이러한 내용을 조형적 요소, 기능적 요소, 건축학적 요소, 디자인적 요소로 풀 수 있는 미술교육의 새로운 장이자 도구가 될 수 있다는 점을 밝히었다.The purpose of this study is exploring the educational implication of school space through ‘Ung-Ddung (엉 뚱)’, the Platform of Art and Culture, which was executed as experimental project about school space in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. As a result, this study drew on three findings as follows. First, ‘Ung-Ddung (엉뚱)’ project pursues eco-friendly, functional, beautiful and emotionally safe school space which contributed to elevating the effect of learning and innovating school classroom for the future. However, ‘Ung-Ddung (엉뚱)’ focused more on the matter of space sovereignty, encouraging school students to examine the relationship of self and school space, which is the second finding of this research. Third, art practice, which was performed in the form of art integration, focusing more on memory connection which body and emotions recall about school space, plays an important role of working with students there. Finally, I can conclude that school space can be an excellent medium for curriculum and instruction to address the issue of space sovereignty and art practices also can be thoughtful methods to recall embedded experience, which would provide new possibility for art education.
