Abstract The accuracy of the Eddington approximation in determining the albedo of a planetary atmosphere is discussed as a function of optical thickness and angle of incidence for anisotropic phase functions which are typical of clouds and hazes. An error in an earlier paper by Irvine is pointed out. It is found that the Eddington approximation gives more accurate results for large angles of incidence than was previously indicated, but that the approximation still fails for thin layers and single-scattering albedos a 1 when the phase function is very forward directed.
