Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses the economic role that tourism in parks and protected areas play in regional economies. It then looks at how visitation to parks is translated into local economic activity and how this is measured. Several examples (from Australia, Canada, Belize, and the USA) of the significance of park-based tourism illustrate the varying success of this type of economic development scenario and provide insight into how communities can benefit economically from tourism while sustaining their quality of life.
