Abstract This chapter provides basic concepts in assessing and monitoring the impact of tourism in national parks and protected areas. It covers: models for public use measurement; the use of tourism statistics in decision making; the establishment of a statistical database of visitation; visit and visitor attributes; importance and performance measures in surveys of tourists' satisfaction; the reporting of results; and the role of audits of important figures.
