Abstract
This article was written as Chapter 3 of a history of dentistry in the United States and Western Europe on which the late George B. Denton, PhD, was working at the time of his death in 1963. Its original title was “Sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: The earliest dental literature and the study of human dental anatomy.” Doctor Denton devoted 46 years of his professional life to dentistry. For 30 years he taught dental history and dental writing at Northwestern University Dental School. From 1949 until 1963 he served as full-time research consultant to the American Dental Association library. An internationally recognized expert on dental history and dental literature, Doctor Denton was the author of The Vocabulary of Dentistry and Oral Science , published by the ADA in 1958. He edited the Bulletin of the History o f Dentistry from 1953 to 1963.
