Abstract

Abstract A general analysis of four-frequency parametric converters employing a single varactor is undertaken. It is shown that a non-zero phase angle between the fundamental and a higher-order component of the series for the time-varying capacitance is desirable. If this is obtainable, then the converter may have unidirectional grain, or be conjugately matched at input and output, or be ‘ non-reciprocal ’, in each case with high forward power gain. The possible sideband frequencies that can be chosen for output and idler to realize these types of converter are examined, as are the relative merits of the three forms of converter.
