Abstract

During the Second Punic War we do not hear of any troubles or even friction in Etruria till the end of 209 B.C. In 217 B.C., when Hannibal is operating in the midst of their country after his victory at Lake Trasimene, the Etruscan towns remain loyal to Rome. Even after the battle of Cannae they do not desert her?a loyalty not less noteworthy, at a time when many Italic peoples already consider Rome's defeat a certainty, because it is more or less enforced by the presence of Roman troops and the vigilance of the Senate.
