Abstract
Differential cross sections were measured for elastic and inelastic scattering of 25.0 MeV α-particles from 19 F for the first 21 excited states. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of DWBA using the collective form factor description. Significant octupole strength was found for the 5.428 MeV (3.48 W.u.) and 5.630 MeV states (2.36 W.u.) in addition to that for the 1.35 MeV state (1.93 W.u.). The ground state rotational band was analyzed with the coupled channel Born approximation to extract quadrupole and hexadecapole deformation parameters ( β 2 = 0.35 and β 4 = 0.12). The 19 F(α, α′) results are compared to the results of other experimental and theoretical investigations. A major discrepancy still exists between nuclear inelastic and electromagnetic measurements of the octupole transition strength to the 1.35 MeV state.
