Abstract

Equilibrium forms (E-form) and dissolution forms (D-form) of Ge and Si in various dissolution agents were investigated by the dissolution of single crystal spheres and single crystal hollow semispheres. The D-form sequence [100], [ hk0], [110], [ hhl], [111] corresponds to E-forms consisting of {111}, combinations of {111} with increasing proportions of {100} and finally {100}, as predicted by theoretical considerations. The assumption that the D-form faces are composed of microscopic or submicroscopic or submicroscopic sized equilibrium form faces in a terrace-like way are confirmed by direct observations with a scanning electron microscope.
