Abstract

The matrix procedure, developed by W. T. Thompson and N. A. Haskell, to obtain the phase velocity dispersion relations for Rayleigh and Love waves in multilayered isotropic media, is extended to obtain the dispersion relation for generalized surface waves in multilayered media, where the layers may be either isotropic or anisotropic. The procedure is extended to anisotropic layers by describing the anisotropy by the fourth-rank tensor of elastic coefficients, and by reorientating the tensor so that the direction of wave propagation is along the x-axis.
