I wish I were not so puzzled as to how to review this serious and detailed historical and philosophical essay, concerning perhaps the most significant of all crystallizations of thought in physical science - the development of the idea of energy conservation. Dr Elkana's subject is important, his range of reference is wide and up to date, he has worked with leaders in the field such as T S Kuhn and Bernard Cohen and has assimilated their ideas, and he has a unique and clear thesis to propound.
