Abstract

Concerns the recent claim to have discovered a magnetic monopole by observing a change in the flux trapped in a superconducting ring. It is shown, in simple terms, how to calculate the magnetic charge in this type of event. Dirac's quantisation condition, according to which the product of any electric and any magnetic charge is quantised, is derived, and it then follows immediately that the magnetic charge which has been observed only satisfies Dirac's condition if it is the electron that has the 'fundamental' electric charge; the possibility that quarks carry the fundamental charge is ruled out.
