Abstract
Direct connection was confirmed between an optically visible line defect and the origin of composite growth spirals in a transparent columnar 57R-SiC crystal grown by Lely's sublimation method. The line defect, therefore, must be a cluster of dislocations. The observation is an evidence of the Frank's growth mechanism of polytypic crystals.
