Abstract
The women's movement has occupied a central role in the struggle around citizenship rights. Over the course of two and a half centuries, women have challenged the universality of democratic language, highlighting not only the ways in which women have been excluded from citizenship, but the ways in which different groups of women - at different points in time - have been included.
