Abstract

Abstract The diffusion coefficient and solubility of gold in sodium have been measured between 0°c and 77°c. The diffusion is described by the equation: and the solubility by the equation: where the activation energies are in kcal mol−1. Reasons are given for believing that diffusion is by interstitial defects although diffusion by tightly bound impurity-vacancy pairs cannot be excluded. Unusual features of the gold concentration profile in specimens quenched to a low temperature before sectioning, notably an inverted slope immediately beneath the specimen surface and a low gold concentration ’ tail ’ extending deep into the crystal, are shown to be due to the high diffusion rate and low solubility of gold in sodium.
