The Diagnosis, Supervision and Treatment of Minor Malocclusions and Arch Irregularities

Abstract

The development of the dentition has been reviewed briefly with an emphasis on certain features which should help the observer determine if a dentition is maturing in a normal fashion. The diagnosis, supervision and treatment of a variety of irregularities have been discussed according to the most opportune time for their treatment. Those problems that are often best treated during the period of the primary dentition include early loss of primary teeth, crossbites and habits. Those abnormalities which lend themselves to treatment most advantageously during the period of the mixed dentition include early loss of primary molars, crossbites, ectopic eruption of first permanent molars, and mild anterior crowding.
