Abstract

Conventional transducers are widely used for high voltage measurement and monitoring purposes. However, these transducers are known to have several drawbacks. This limits their widespread deployment in large numbers especially in high voltage applications such as substation equipment or overhead lines located in rural areas. Hence, a voltage transducer is proposed based on a novel exploitation of the electrical field distribution around the high voltage conductor. Numerical methods are used to determine the electric field distribution around the high voltage conductor and the transducer. The computed electric field is used to calibrate the proposed transducer. The computational results obtained are validated using a simplified analytical method.
