Abstract
Abstract This paper develops a leisure behavior index for ranking respondents according to the degree of their participation in a given set of leisure activities. It then investigates relationships between the leisure behavior index and each of six socioeconomic variables: age, sex, present residence, size of household, income, and education. An individual's leisure behavior index consisted of the total number of different leisure dimensions or factors participated in by each respondent. Each leisure dimension contained one or more highly and positively correlated leisure activities. The data used in this study were provided by the Continuous National Survey, undertaken by the National Opinion Research Center, at the University of Chicago in 1973. Principal Component Analysis was used to determine the underlying factors of the given set of reported leisure activities. Six factors of leisure activity were extracted from the data in this study.
