Thirty-four cell lines were examined for presence of human viruses by two detection methods, DNA hybridisation and polymerase chain reaction. The sensitivities of both methods were examined semi quantitatively by use of known copy numbers of viral DNA. The viruses detected were Human Immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 (HIV 1/2), Human T-cell Leukaemia Virus types 1 and 2 (HTLV 1/2), Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV).
