Abstract

The design of a double layer magnetic shield for the control unit of a mass spectrometer is presented in the paper. A F.E. analysis has been carried out, in order to take into account the non linear B-H curve of the shield soft magnetic material and to minimize the shield weight. The F.E. formulations adopted in both 2-D and 3-D analyses, the optimization algorithm, the main results of the analyses and the design choices are presented. A prototype shield has been built, its performances have been experimentally tested and the results are compared with those coming from the F.E. analyses.
