Abstract
Recently there have been considerable advances in the development of systems for structural integrity measurement together with the inferential techniques and methods. Many of these systems have used first-generation expert system assumptions, resulting in systems which are incompatible and difficult to adapt or maintain. It is argued that complex intelligent systems can only be developed by a modular approach. Cooperating expert system design methodologies fulfil the design criteria.
