Abstract
In economic entomology, particularly forest entomology, the Description of insect numbers in absolute terms may be misleading. The effect of an individual on its host varies tremendously between species and this gives rise to unwarranted comparisons within current systems. The insect-host relationship between Recurvaria starki Freeman and Pinus contorta Dougl. is reviewed lind used as an example in the erection of a three-class system for the description of insect numbers based on the effect of the insect on its host.
