Abstract

Previously published measurements of solidification cell size λ as a function of alloy concentration C 0 and growth velocity V in AlMn alloys under conditions approaching the limit of absolute stability are compared with predictions of cell tip radius R as a function of C 0 and V. The measurements fall within the range R < λ < 4 R and show the same dependences on C 0 and V as are predicted for R. Comparison of the measurements with predictions of primary dendrite spacing λ 1 in contrast show increasing discrepancies with increases in both V and C 0.
