Abstract

For many years, the role of matron has been recognized as key for the development of nursing practice within a trust. At Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, the role of matron was seen as so important that the post of dental matron was created. This paved the way for the beginnings of an innovative staffing structure for the Trust's dental directorate, which included the implementation of many of the key nursing roles found within a general nursing structure, and ‘lead the way’ with the new concept of practice development.
