Abstract
A study has been made of the degradation of aromatic polyamide based on 3,3′-dimethoxy-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane and isophthalic acid dichloride in an oxygen (180–260°) and in vacuo (330–400°). Schemes for the thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation in which a major role is played by transformations involving methoxy group participation have been proposed after analysis of the volatile products and investigations involving the use of labelled atoms and viscosimetric measurements. Possible cyclization of the polyamide to from a benzoxazole structure is discussed.
