Abstract
The mercury-photosensitized decomposition of hexane between 300 and 400° C has been studied in a flow system, the products being analyzed by gas chromatography. Under the experimental conditions employed, between one-third and one-half of the reacted hexane resulted in dodecane and other higher hydrocarbons. The yield of decomposition products per mole of hexane decomposed varied little with change of temperature, hexane pressure or time of reaction. The nature and distribution of these products can be accounted for by the decomposition scheme proposed by Kossiakoff & Rice, if radical addition and hydrogenation reactions are included.
