Abstract

As has been repeatedly pointed out by several authors, from Jespersen (1894:317 f.) to Norde (1997), just to mention an early and one of the most recent discussions, the genitive ending -s of the modern Germanic languages, English and the Scandinavian languages, is a morpheme which continues to constitute a challenge to any description because it simply does not behave as a “normal” case ending.
