Abstract Einar Haugen's historical survey o f the Scandinavian languages covers c. 1500 years of Scandinavian language history, from the Proto-Scandinavian/ North Germanic language of the earliest runic inscriptions (before c. 550 A.D.) to the present-day spoken variants of the six Scandinavian official standard languages: Danish, Faroese, Icelandic, Bokmal-Norwegian, Nynorsk-Norwegian, and Swedish. (Of the languages in Scandinavia only those of Indo-European descent are included in the survey.)
