Abstract

The DANPACE study is a Danish multicenter study which will evaluate the potential benefit of dual-chamber pacing as compared to atrial inhibited (AAI) pacing in patients with sick sinus syndrome requiring a permanent pacemaker. A previous small-scale Danish pacemaker study compared AAI with ventricular inhibited (VVI) pacing in this patient population and found reduced mortality, reduced occurrence of atrial fibrillation and reduced risk of thromboembolic complications in patients randomized to physiologic pacing (AAI mode) compared with VVI pacing. The DANPACE study plans to include a total of 1,900 patients and have a mean follow-up of 5.5 years. At present (February 2001), all 11 pacemaker-implanting centers in Denmark are actively recruiting patients for the study and about 350 patients have been randomized. The recruitment period is expected to be 6 years. The primary end point of the study is total mortality.
