Abstract

A VMEbus based high voltage power supply system is being built for the DØ experiment at Fermilab. This system includes power supplies delivering Ø to either +5.6 KV or -5.6 KV with output current up to 1 mA and Ø to +2.0 KV with output current up to 3 mA. The ripple on the high voltage output for frequencies up to 1 KHz is less than 100 mV peak-to-peak on a single supply. For frequencies above 1 KHz the ripple is less than 1 mV RMS. The control of this power supply system is achieved exclusively through computer interfacing with VMEbus. A 15-bit-plus-sign ADC provides fast readback of high voltage signals at 50 μs per read, allowing efficient control of a large system as well as detailed monitoring of any particular supply. The supply trips on over voltage, over current, or external interlock signals. In addition each supply has an external trip line which can be used to tie multiple supplies together into a group. The trip of any supply in the group will then trip the entire group.
