Abstract
Abstract The general condition defining the crossover temperature T * in superconducting Coulomb-blockade electrometers is investigated. For low temperatures, which are of the most interest for these systems, a new rigorous and quantitative perturbative result is given. The effective number of states available for excitation, N eff , is also written in closed form. In addition, further analytic results for an improved incremental system free energy are discussed. If such Cooper pair box systems could be built without the deleterious effects of stray substrate charge, a future application could be quantum logic gates.
