Abstract
The results of the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial (CREST) have been eagerly anticipated for almost a decade. Sponsored by the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders, it is the largest randomized clinical trial comparing percutaneous carotid angioplasty to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) ever conducted, allocating 1321 symptomatic patients with 50-99% carotid stenosis and 1181 asymptomatic patients with 60-99% stenosis to either angioplasty (n=1271) or CEA (n=1251) at 117 centers in the United States and Canada from December 2000 to July 2008.
