Abstract

Electrical stimulation of the penis or the dorsal penis nerve causes bilateral contractions of the cremaster muscles in the acute spinal rat. An asynchronous discharge could also be recorded from the genitofemoral nerve innervating the cremaster muscles after a latency of about 10 msec. Stimulation to the central cut end of one of the genitofemoral nerves elicited no discharge at the contralateral genitofemoral nerve but inhibited the cremasteric reflex from a subsequent penis stimulation. Stimulation of a number of cutaneous and muscle nerves also resulted in inhibition with similar time courses. An inhibition from cutaneous stimulation was shown to be resistant to strychnine but was antagonized by picrotoxin. The cremasteric reflex in the rat was blocked by various central nervous system depressants.
