Abstract

AbstractIn order to be stored efficiently, hydrogen gas is commonly compressed to high pressures making compression a crucial step in the value chain. Existing mechanical compressors have efficiency and reliability drawbacks, while novel technologies require further development and demonstration to reach market maturity. Comprehensive research & development efforts on metal hydride compression have recently resulted in significant advancements, allowing to overcome the main issues. A hybrid compression concept, proposed by the consortium of the COSMHYC project series, benefits from the advantages of both mechanical and metal hydride compression technologies, while limiting their drawbacks. It is currently being tested and demonstrated at full‐scale for implementation in real life applications.
