Abstract

The mechanical properties of mammalian outer hair cells depend upon different arrays of actin filaments. There are two separate arrays in the lateral cortex. One is readily extracted and is associated with the lateral cisternae. The other is extremely stable and is a major component of the cortical lattice. We discuss both these arrays in terms of slow and high frequency force generation.
