Abstract The number of pairs of galaxies which are both bright and close is smaller than would be expected statistically from the individual distributions of separation and luminosity. The effect may be produced by dynamical friction causing the bright close pairs to spiral together, or it may have a genetic origin. In either case, the observation appears to give mild support for the massive halo hypothesis, since it would be difficult to understand a relation between luminosity and separation on scales greater than approximately 100 kpc if galaxies had effective sizes greater than approximately 10 kpc.
