Tremaine, S. D. Abstract If our Galaxy has an extended massive halo, then dynamical friction must have caused substantial decay of the orbits of the Magellanic Clouds over the last 10 billion yr, during which time the Galactic tidal force at perigalacticon must have steadily increased. The present proximity of the Large and Small Clouds can be explained if they were originally a bound system which was disrupted by tidal forces only at its last, closest perigalacticon. The Large Cloud will be disrupted by the Galaxy in 2 to 4 billion yr, increasing the luminosity of the Galaxy by -0.24 mag.
