Abstract
Cabbages and Condoms, a restaurant located in central Bangkok and founded by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) to help empower the poor and fund sex and AIDS education, is a showcase for fine food, creatively humorous artwork and an all important safe-sex message. This is a restaurant with a mission and Thongleum Damviengkum is the resident artist with a message. Using out-of-date condoms and birth control pills, Thong creates humorous, imaginative and educational artwork. Posters on abortion, safe sex, and family planning hang everywhere. The lampshades are festooned with condoms; birth control pills are glued on flowerpots. Fake flowers made from condoms hang from real trees. Mannequins dressed in outfits made from condoms and birth-control pills greet the diners. This is clearly a place where laughter and learning go hand in hand with haute cuisine.
