Abstract
Abstract Visser & Van Staden's paper (1991) set out to evaluate the theoretical and empirical contributions to the South African Journal of Sociology for the past ten years. The method of evaluation is rigid and scientific. However, the present review argues that such an assessment has various shortcomings, i.a. that the SAJS does not represent South African sociology satisfactorily, that no cognisance has been taken of past reviews of local sociology, and that it does not review theoretical trends in the development of sociology. In order to complement the analysis, the present review suggests that the social context of South African sociology should be taken into account
