Abstract
Changes in building practise have led to an increased use of lightweight components in modem buildings. Lightweight walls and floors do not rely on mass to prevent sound transmission but on the way in which the various components with different material properties are combined. This requires a knowledge of both the materials used and the details of construction. The traditional approach to design is to compare the proposed construction with measured data from similar systems. However, the possible range of lightweight designs makes this impractical. Theoretical models offer an alternative approach to design and are becoming increasingly important for sound transmission in buildings.
