Abstract

This chapter reviews the many ways that neoliberal theory is informing our understanding of the public good in higher education. We will examine the scholarly response to this market-driven definition of the public good. All of the work we review in this chapter shares a number of common features: concern about neoliberal ideals subverting traditional understandings of the public good; worry about the broad mandate of higher education being reduced simply to job placement and workplace training; alarm at the loss of the civic and moral dimension of higher education; and a sense that access, opportunity, and democratic ideals are being actively subverted by an exclusive focus on certain kinds of marketplace considerations.
