Abstract

The paper deals with a discussion of a current passage mechanism in the low-pressure discharges that operate in a cathode material vapor (vacuum arcs) or in a gas (arc with a hot cathode or glow-type discharges). The principal properties of such discharges are mainly determined by the near cathode regions, for instance, by the cathode spot for vacuum arc. The concept of nonmonotonic potential distribution for the near cathode regions is developed.
