Abstract
In this chapter we set the scene and introduce some of the main characters. We begin with the three representations of complex numbers: the Cartesian representation, the polar representation, and the spherical representation. Then we introduce the basic functions encountered in complex analysis: the exponential function, the logarithm function, power functions, and trigonometric functions.
