PurposeAims to guide the young librarian and to compensate for his incompleatness.Design/methodology/approachThe article, offering the author's views, was originally published in Library Review in 1931.FindingsAsserts that the compleat librarian finds himself falling into what some may consider the cardinal sin of the age. In attempting to be a specialist in all things, he succeeds in being a specialist in nothing. Granting that wide horizons and mental agility are necessary elements in the qualifications of the good librarian, provides guidance on how best to set about obtaining them.Originality/valueThe article provides information of a historical nature, of value to present‐day information professionals.
