Abstract

The authors use dynamic shift–share analysis (DSSA) to analyse Hong Kong's travel services export industry. They seek answers to three questions. Is the travel sector becoming more competitive than other service sectors? Has Hong Kong gained any advantage in attracting visitors over its neighbours with a similar number of visitor arrivals? What kind of visitor is Hong Kong best equipped to attract? By conducting three DSSA studies, the authors demonstrate the relatively disadvantaged status of Hong Kong's travel services exports and offer suggestions on how to improve this unsatisfactory situation.
