Abstract
ROBERT W. BAXTER and ELMER A. ROTH University of Kansas, Lawrence The genus Calamopit)ys was established in 1856 by Franz Unger (7) based on Upper Devonian, or possibly Lower Carboniferous, material from Saalfeld, Thuringia. In the almost 100 year period since that date a total of six species assigned to the genus have been discovered and described. As listed by Read (3) they are as follows: Calamopitys saturni Unger.-Cypridina shales, Thuringia Calamopitys annularis (Unger) Solms-Laubach. (same locality as above) Calamopitys amnericana Scott and Jeffry. New Albany shales, Kentucky. Calamopitys foersti Reed. New Albany shales, Kentucky. Calamopitys radiata Scott. Calciferous sandstone, Scotland. Calamopitys blayaci Corsin. Lydites of Montagne Noire, France. All of these species are either Devonian or Lower Carboniferous (Mississippean) in age.
