Abstract

Data are presented from Old French which motivate the independent status of the clitic group as a prosodic category at this stage of the language Not only is the clitic group characterized by a specific stress pattern different from that cf words and phonological phrases, but also, a process of syncope (shwa deletion) is seen to have as its domain the clitic group.
