Abstract
SUMMARYThe study of mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of Lagostomus maximus (« vizcacha ») belonging to the family Chinchillidae (Chinchilloidea, Caviomorpha, Rodentia) is reported. The diploid number was found to be 56 (54 A/XX-XY). Except for a pair of acrocentrics, the chromosomes are metacentric or submetacentric. A pair of autosomes with satellites is heteromorphic. The karyotypes of « vizcacha » and « chinchilla » are compared.
