Abstract
Cervical ripening (CR) is recommended as the first stage of induction of labour (IOL) in most circumstances.1 The procedure involves application of an agent, either pharmaceutical such as Prostin, or mechanical, including balloon catheter or osmotic dilator, with the aim of softening and shortening the cervix in preparation for labour. Traditionally, CR has taken place in hospital. However, some UK maternity units now offer the opportunity to return home for a period after application of the cervical ripening agent, referred to as home CR.
