Abstract

The influence of leader-member exchange (LMX) on subordinate helping behaviour in Chinese organisations has been investigated extensively. It is, however, unfortunate that little is known about how Chinese supervisors view subordinate helping behaviour when such behaviour is directed to them without their solicitation. Given this, we attempt to develop a theoretical model describing the consequences of unsolicited subordinate helping behaviour directed to the supervisor experienced by Chinese supervisor. In particular, we propose that unsolicited subordinate helping behaviour can result in loss of mianzi, perceived relationship conflict, and low-quality LMX experienced by Chinese supervisors. By filling this research gap, this study provides important insights into understanding subordinate helping behaviour directed to the supervisor in Chinese organisations.
